Abstract
This study examined the mediating effects of school adjustment on the relationship between middle school students¡¯ depressive symptoms and smartphone overdependence. For this purpose, The Depression Inventory(CES-D) scale, the School Adjustment Scale, and Smartphone and Smartphone Overdependence Scale were applied to 466 first, second and third graders of three middle schools in Seoul. The collected data were subjected to correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis using the SPSS 23.0 statistical program, and the mediator effect validation procedure proposed by Baron and Kenny (1986) was used to examine the mediating effects. Additionally, Sobel's(1982) test was used to verify the significance of the mediation effects. The study revealed the following results: First, depressive symptoms showed a positive correlation with smartphone overdependence and showed a negative correlation with the school adjustment sub-factor(school study, school friendships, school teachers, school life). The school adjustment sub-factor(school study, school friendships, school teachers, school life) showed a negative correlation with smartphone overdependence. Second, the middle school students¡¯ school adjustment(school study, school life) exerted a partial mediating role on the depressive symptoms and smartphone overdependence. Through this research, the study found that the level of adjustment in terms of school study and school life should be considered if we wish to prevent the overdependence of middle school students with depression. It is also meaningful that it provided basic data on psychological intervention and program development that could allow future researchers to check the level of school adjustment and depressive symptoms affecting smartphone overdependence.
